Volunteer Spotlight: Karen Perez

This month we are celebrating one of our wonderful volunteers, Karen Perez! Since joining us in April, Karen has continued to be a kind and familiar presence in our childcare space during Young Moms programming. With a personal connection to our mission, she brings empathy and understanding to every volunteer shift. Beyond childcare, Karen has packed summer meals, sorted donations, helped prepare for our annual Gala, and continually seeks to deepen her understanding of our work. We’re so grateful for the time, care, and heart Karen shares with the YWRC Community.

Karen’s path to volunteering with the YWRC began in a way that’s familiar to many.

“I first found out about the YWRC through social media while following other nonprofit organizations. I noticed they were tagged in a few posts, and after looking into their mission, I knew I wanted to get involved.”

Her love for children and commitment to supporting young moms shines through in everything Karen does.

“I volunteer because it helps young moms, it lets them know they have people supporting them. As a teen mom myself, I wish I had known about this amazing organization 16 years ago. I would have loved to be a part of it back then. I’m so glad I am now.”

Karen’s favorite part of volunteering is witnessing the children grow and change over time, seeing the new things they can do.

For Karen, volunteering is about connection, contribution, and setting an example for her family.

“Volunteering is important because I can focus on giving my time and energy to my community and remind us we all have something valuable to offer. It also shows my kids how important it is to give back and support others.”

Beyond her time at the YWRC, Karen also gives back to the community in other ways.

“My kids and I volunteer for Big Brothers Big Sisters as a family duo. We meet with our little twice a month for a couple of hours. It’s been a pleasure getting to know our little and his culture.

Karen’s advice for youth in our community is powerful and inspiring:

“Your story matters, and you get to write it. Don’t wait for someone else to do it.”

And just for fun, here are two things you may not know about Karen:

  1. She plays the violin.
  2. She is naturally really shy, but pushes herself to step outside of her comfort zone.

Feleecia, YWRC Community Outreach Manager, shared her appreciation of Karen:

“Thank you, Karen, for your ongoing dedication to supporting the childcare needs of our participants and beyond. Your time and consistency make a meaningful difference in creating a nurturing and safe environment for both the children and their mothers. We’re so grateful to have you on the YWRC volunteer team and look forward to your continued growth and impact within our organization.”

Thank you, Karen, for your support and for being such an important part of the YWRC community!
