Volunteer Spotlight: Sally Hazen

This month we are celebrating one of our wonderful childcare volunteers, Sally Hazen. Since joining us in August, Sally has become a weekly presence and familiar face for our Young Moms participants and their children.

“Before moving, I worked in a pediatrician’s office and I missed working with kids every day. When I moved to Des Moines, I knew I wanted to get involved with programs that help young women. I knew my school had worked with YWRC in the past so I wanted to find more ways to get involved!”

Sally genuinely enjoys her time volunteering in childcare and it’s apparent to all who work alongside her.

“Spending time with the kids and watching them grow week to week is so fun! It’s also been so great getting to know the moms. The best part of my role is helping out the moms by making sure they know their kids are safe and having fun while they’re in group!”

We are grateful for the time and skills Sally gives, and are especially glad to know she benefits from her volunteer time as well.

“Volunteering is a great way for me to connect with my new community in Des Moines. Getting out of my normal circles and making a positive impact is sometimes the highlight of my week!”

In addition to her childcare volunteer role, Sally also shares her time with several organizations.

“I’ve also volunteered with New Directions Shelter for their children’s outreach in the evenings. This summer I did the Book Buddy program with United Way of Central Iowa, a weekly volunteer opportunity where I met with elementary schoolers every week to read with them.”

Sally’s advice for youth is:

“Everyone has something to offer their community! Whenever I’m feeling discouraged I’ve found that focusing on being kind to others and sharing what I have to give makes me feel better about the world.”

This outlook and approach to live has been inspired, at least in part, by her mom.

“My mom was my role model growing up. She taught me that being kind costs nothing!”

After attending school and volunteering throughout the community, Sally still finds time for her varied interests. Three things you may not know about her are:

  1. She hiked 13 miles up a volcano in the Galapagos Islands
  2. When she was a kid, her family bred Ragdoll cats
  3. She crocheted 10 hats last December!

Feleecia, YWRC Community Outreach Manager, shared her appreciation of Sally:

“Thank you, Sally, for your consistent support of the childcare needs for the Young Moms programs. Your time and kindness make a huge difference in creating a nurturing and positive environment for both the children and their mothers. We’re so grateful to have you as a member of the YWRC volunteer team!”

Thank you, Sally, for helping to create a safe, inviting, and warm space for participants!
